New hardware release - Powermic III

Nuance recently released the PowerMic III microphone which offers simplified, thumb-control operation for dictating, navigating, reviewing and editing speech recognition generated documentation.

The PowerMic III advances clinician & professional PC dictation to a new level, making it easier and faster to control voice recording, navigate and select fields in on-screen templates and standard reports and move through recognised text reports for review and editing.

In addition to providing complete dictation control, the PowerMic III incorporates full-function, Microsoft compatible, PC mouse capabilities into the microphone to reduce the need for care givers to move between the microphone, mouse and keyboard.

Clinicians can rapidly navigate report template fields, then record and use “voice fill-in” capabilities to insert recognised text into report templates. By combining an ergonomic hand microphone with PC mouse functions, clinicians gain new levels of dictation speed, ease-of-use and productivity.

The Powermic III features USB connectivity for easy plug and-play installation as well as eliminating the need for sound card-enabled PCs and a unidirectional microphone with noise-cancellation ensuring higher accuracy in even the noisiest environments.

This device is compatible with both Dragon Medical Practice Edition 3 and, for the first time in Powermic history, Dragon Professional Group.

Nuance Medical Speech Recognition Solutions Increase Physician Documentation Speed by 26% in Independent Trial at Düsseldorf University Clinic

A scientific trial assessing medical documentation speed and accuracy when using Nuance’s clinical speech recognition technology - compared to physicians typing data - has been conducted at Düsseldorf University Hospital in Germany in a first of its kind worldwide. In addition to measuring documentation speed and accuracy, the objective of the independent study was to detail objectively the effects of using Nuance’s medical speech recognition solutions in a university hospital with respect to documentation completeness, length and physician satisfaction over other means of entering information into Electronic Patient Records (EPRs).

Key findings include:

  • The overall increase in documentation speed through web-based automatic speech recognition (ASR) assistance was 26%
  • Participants documented an average of 356 characters per report when not assisted by ASR and 649 characters per report when assisted by ASR – an 82% increase
  • Participants' average mood rating was 1.3 using ASR assistance compared to 1.6 without ASR assistance (scale of 1-3 where 1 =good)

Out of 1,455 reports, 718 (49.35%) were assisted by speech recognition technology and 737 (50.65%) were not. The authors of the report concluded that medical documentation with the assistance of speech recognition technology leads to an increase in documentation speed, document length and completeness and participants' mood when compared to self-typing. They also concluded that Nuance medical speech recognition is a meaningful and effective tool for the clinical documentation process.

In the trial’s analysis of 1,455 reports, physician documentation was completed 26% faster using speech recognition technology assistance.

The research findings come at a key time for healthcare providers as they make the transition to EPRs and consider the most effective data input options in order to realise the full benefits of deploying digital records. Given that healthcare professionals spend a significant portion of their time on the computer and are rarely trained typists, alternatives to typing - such as modern and accurate speech recognition technology– have the potential to improve the satisfaction of health professionals through increased documentation efficiency, accuracy and quality.

“Medical professionals consistently voice their desire to have their administration burden reduced in order to have more time to spend with their patients, to put them back at the centre of care. This most recent trial demonstrates that using speech recognition can help free healthcare providers to deliver the personal attention that both patients demand and that healthcare professionals want to provide,” said Alan Fowles, senior vice president, Nuance Healthcare International Sales & Operations.

Client feedback – Success stories (Part 2)

Walt Disney famously said “Do what you do so well that they will want to see it again and bring their friends”.

We regularly contact clients we have worked with to gain an insight into their own training experiences and to monitor how well we are delivering the services we provide.

These are some of their recent comments:

“I am still adjusting to my disability and the trainer, Neil Wheeler, within the first hour of my first training session put any preconceptions and reservations I had aside and showed me the potential of Dragon NaturallySpeaking software to increase my productivity well beyond the scope of my disability being of any hindrance to me. The subsequent three training sessions I had with Neil only increased on this. I feel the service I received from Neil Wheeler and the team at Freedom of Speech was excellent. ”
Nick (MOD)

“The trainers at Freedom of Speech were so kind and made me feel immediately at ease. Learning with them has been a brilliant experience. The only disappointment I felt from my training was that it had to end. Please can my thanks be passed to Neil and Veena. They are both brilliant at their jobs.”
Ellie (Portsmouth County Council)

“The training exceeded my expectations as the trainer showed me things that I didn’t think I would get a chance to do. She moved at my pace which was very reassuring. I found that they were a very useful series of sessions. Veena went through each aspect at a good pace and very clearly. I found the support on how to write codes myself extremely useful and made me see the real possibilities and benefits of using Dragon. Veena was very polite, easy to talk to, clear and worked at the speed that was good for me. I looked forward to my sessions each week and three hours went by very fast!”
Rachel (Hampshire County Council)

Assistive technology training

You’ve had your Access to Work assessment, been sent the recommended hardware and software items and you’re now wondering how to use them. What should you do to ensure you operate them effectively? How can you take advantage of all of their benefits and features?

The answer is one-to-one training.

Assistive technology training is essential when incorporating new technology into your working and home life. If you bought a brand new car, you would expect to have driving lessons before embarking on a journey. If you didn't, how confident would you feel driving it for the first time? Nervous an unsure of how to deal with the road ahead would be our guess.

The same rule applies to new assistive technology software and hardware. Training gives you the skills and confidence to operate your new technology effectively in your specific environment.

What are the benefits to Assistive Technology training?

Accessibility – Training enables you to connect the software/hardware recommendations together so that they work as a complete solution. For example, if you received a trackball mouse, speech recognition software and text-to-speech software, your trainer can show you how each item works in conjunction with the others allowing you to fully access your computer applications and reduce the impact that your disability may have on your daily tasks.

Productivity – Using assistive technology applications, such as speech recognition software correctly can enhance your productivity at work. If you do not understand how to dictate and correct text using the built-in tools properly, it may actually take you longer than manual typing! Applying the correct techniques in using the application speeds up how quickly you can achieve your specific tasks.

Reduced learning time – Have you tried to use a new piece of software by just trawling through the training manual or on-line help file? It can take ages and you may spend time learning about specific topics that don’t actually apply to what you want to achieve. A one-to-one trainer adapts the training course to suit your specific needs, does not teach topics you don’t need and can condense the information contained in large incomprehensible manuals into understandable & user-specific training topics.

Immediate response to queries – If you have a question about a particular function of an application, a training manual will not always give you an immediate answer. An on-site trainer can address your query immediately, allowing you to learn more quickly, reduce any frustration with taking on new skills and advance your knowledge in using the software.

Confidence – A complex reading pen or new PC application for example, can be daunting when you first try to use them. Training gives you the personal confidence to get the most out of your equipment and assist with your disability.

Aftercare Support –Training courses should include aftercare support in the form of access (normally via phone and e-mail) to an experienced technical support helpdesk. If your software stops working or goes wrong, you can contact a qualified person to assist you in fixing it and ensuring that your solution continues to work for you.

Remember that training is only as effective as the qualifications and experience of the trainer who assists you. Ensure they have the necessary qualifications/accreditations  (i.e. Dragon Certified Instructor or TextHelp trainer) and experience (at least 2 years delivering AT training) for the solutions they are assisting you with. Ask them for proof/copies of their certificates to be sure – a good trainer will happily provide the necessary documentation to confirm to you that they are qualified to deliver competent courses.

Have you just received your new equipment? Contact us to book your training.
